Not letting this be forgotten, this might be the best pure political drama to make its presence known on Netflix. Focusing on the character, not Kevin Spacey; there is plenty of dialogue and monologues that need a list of its own. Delivery on these particular lines transcends the plot even if politics is not your cup of tea. Speaking of tea, this was a remake of a UK version praised higher than the that original.

  • “For those of us climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy. There is but one rule: hunt or be hunted.”
  • “Such a waste of talent. He chose money over power. In this town, a mistake nearly everyone makes. Money is the Mc-mansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building that stands for centuries. I cannot respect someone who doesn’t see the difference.”
  • “There are two kinds of pain. The sort of pain that makes you strong, or useless pain. The sort of pain that’s only suffering. I have no patience for useless things.”
  • “You can’t turn a ‘no’ to a ‘yes’ without a ‘maybe’ in between.”
  • “Every kitten grows up to be a cat. They seem so harmless at first. Small, quiet, lapping up their saucer of milk. But once their claws get long enough, they draw blood. Sometimes from the hand that feeds them. For those of us climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy. There is but one rule: Hunt or be hunted. Welcome back.”
  • “A heartbeat away form the presidency, and not a single vote cast in my name. Democracy is so overrated.”
  • (visiting the cemetery) “Hey, pop. Been a while, hasn’t it? Did you see that motorcade roll up? It’s the first time a President of the United States has visited Gaffney. Can you believe it? Oh, I wouldn’t be here if I had a choice. But I have to do these sorts of things now. It makes me seem more human. And you have to be a little human when you’re the president.”
  • “For those of us climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy. There is but one rule: hunt or be hunted.”
  • “First, you must learn to pull an oar. Only then can you take the helm.”
  • “From this moment on you are a rock. You absorb nothing, you say nothing, and nothing breaks you.”
  • “That’s how you devour a whale… one bite at a time.”
  • “We are nothing more or less than what we choose to reveal.”
  • “You are entitled to nothing”
  • “Power is a lot like real estate. It’s all about location, location, location. The closer you are to the source, the higher your property value.”
  • “I’ve always loathed the necessity of sleep. Like death, it puts even the most powerful men on their backs.”

While Frank is an evil bastard, there is a lot of truth to what he says on-screen. Almost inspirational as well, I hope to write about House of Cards again. At least use that title as a metaphor relating to politics or egos on a path of destruction. Read the links above the quotes to see my thoughts more on this impactful performance amongst writing and other things.
