“I’ve never listened to an audiobook before, and I have to say it’s a totally different experience. When you read a book, the story definitely takes place in your head. When you listen, it seems to happen in a little cloud all around it, like a fuzzy knit cap pulled down over your eyes” ― Robin Sloan, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore
Wanting to get into audiobooks for a long time, I am finally there. Currently in my second audiobook listening to Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep, now I can multitask while consuming. Being two separate formats that take different paths, they both reach the same destination. Depending on your focus and attention skills, either form of media is viable.
In defining what is real reading and the accusation of cheating connected to audiobooks, both generate similar experiences and memories. One is associating symbols to a page, with filling in the blanks with accompanying detailed layers of imagination. The other forces you to obtain more perspective quickly through performance, narrative and emotive response.
With higher than average readers, you can absorb all the information easy. But takes longer to listen to compared to engaging with a physical copy. Starting a reading journey is more difficult unless you commit to binging goals and improve your vocabulary awareness. You can be anonymous anywhere if you become comfortable with audiobooks. Hardcopies will always be something public.
