A journal entry written by Lee Sonogan
For my first rant on my digital journal, I wish to discuss the infamous social media app, TikTok. The video-sharing platform has over 800 million users and downloaded over 1.5 million times. Unlike YouTube or the hundreds of way to upload online, Tik Tok appeals to the lowest denominator. Incentivizing people (Mainly teenagers) to focus a lot of time and effort for a sixty second or lower video.
Built-in for making short music videos, it has become something so cringe and virtue seeking driven, where there is not one TikTok I have seen of any quality or value to me in my opinion. While I support people experimenting with singing, dancing, comedy or even lip-syncing, even it’s Memed content is terrible.
Then some implement it for political purposes. I would say that this app will die like a similar platform of Vine did but it is still as popular as ever. Addressing my dislike, it is barely considered an original source of entertainment. And step up your game with some important substance, then I will take it more seriously. Performance art is a serious discipline so I expect creators there to create things that actually push the culture forward, not seemly backwards.
