Nihilism Explained

An article written by: Lee Sonogan

The modern mind is in complete disarray. Knowledge has stretched itself to the point where neither the world nor our intelligence can find any foot-hold. It is a fact that we are suffering from nihilism.”Albert Camus

The cons out way the pros in any form of philosophy related to nihilism. The definition of the word nihilism is the rejection of all moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless. Either in the forms of existential, moral, metaphysical, epistemological and/or the political. Without accepting the changing aspects of life, and gaining new belief systems, we are likely to fall into the hole of nihilism.

First I will speak of the positives of Nihilism in our daily lives. Seeing through a nihilistic lens can make you see yourself and everything around you more clearly. In looking at questionable morality, traditions, and behaviours at different angles in a sceptical way can be calming. Freeing in a way, jealousy, failure, braveness, spontaneous actions, and more can be more than its limitations.

Not taking meaningless literally I can see more flaws in nihilism traits. Compared to someone who has stronger opinions or greater forms of meaning towards concepts. Understanding the potential consequences of nihilism can be intense. But eventually, life stays the same.

Other than a cheap thrill in the absurdity of life, Nihilism leads nowhere and leaves you with nothing. The lack of morality due to thinking pain is insignificant is not a way to move forward. Radical scepticism, extreme pessimism and pathological language have less potential. Compared to the pursuit of universal truths, satisfying positives, thought-provoking conversation and more.

I want to avoid nihilistic traits like the plague. When I was at my worst in life, I had to put myself into counselling to get the absolute nihilistic thoughts out of my head. Each of us alone bears the full weight of responsibility for our choices and our lives. Asking questions and determining your reality is the better choice than a starting point stuck in a hole of ignorant self-destructive pain and/or consider the last resort to gain a form of bliss.
