“Not. Coming out this summer. Not.” – Maynard James Keenan
Not since 10,000 Days have we seen a new album from Tool. It has been reported that the new album will be released in 2018. But those same sources said it would be in the first half of the year. Most Tool fans are asking where is the new album? Information has trickled out as a confusing series of contradictions. From people who have heard it already are saying that it continues to evolve and sounds very Tool. Tool’s music is not dark or perverse, it is radically ambitious.
In 2008 the band said they were working on a new album right away. Saying it would come out “sooner rather than later,” the process of creating it would take a lot longer. In 2010 the lead singer Keenan recorded with the band Puscifer while the other band members worked on the instrumentals. Then in 2012 it was reported that it was almost “more than halfway done”.
2013 was when the album was derailed. “There’s no actual songs for either project. It’s still kind of noodles in a big basket. Lots of noodles, just no dishes.” was said about it. By 2014 Tool got sued over some artwork, the band’s insurance company sued the band over technicalities with the case leading the band to file a countersuit against the insurer. In 2015 all legal problems were gone. Later that year Keenan reports that the album is progressing slowly.
The band begins to play a new song live near the end of the year called Descending. New reports say they have enough songs to make more than one album. “a work in progress,” is said in 2017. The drummer said “It’s simple shit and it’s coming out, man. The tracks are long … too long! Definitely too long for the radio.”. In 2018 Maynard tweeted “Words and Melodies 100% Done on all but 1.”
On March 10th the band entered the studio. The recording sessions had begun. “After all the years of writing and arranging (and re-arranging) at the band’s loft, I can at this time officially report that the guys have moved into a major studio where the recording process for the next album is about to begin in earnest,” a statement on the Tool website read. In May 2018 it was reported the each song on the album will exceed 10 minutes in length. No other active band sounds like Tool. I want my third eye pried wide open!
Guitarist Adam Jones plays video games and teases rehearsals on Instagram. Meanwhile, bassist Justin Chancellor assures interviewers that Tool’s writing process is well underway. I liked their new song Descending and I can not wait to hear the rest. 10,000 days has got to be in my top ten albums of all time. Taking all this time to create I hope it smashes through all expectations and limitations. Maybe that’s why Tool has taken this long to make their new album. They care about their fans thoughts on their efforts.
