Nintendo 64 (2000) RPG

Kooper: [when Mario is accused of murder] Are you crazy? Do you really think Mario would do something like that?

The second Mario role-playing video game and the first installment of the Paper Mario series. Released on the Nintendo 64 it has its own paper style look. The video game can be describes as Bowser has become invulnerable by imprisoning the seven Star Spirits and using the wish granting powers of the mythical Star Rod from Star Haven. Mario must rescue the Star Spirits, who have been sealed in cards. Paper Mario is a single player role-playing video game. It is full of Mario comedy dialog/turn-based goodness

This game was originally going to be named Super Mario RPG 2 with normal character models. The Character appearance was inspired from characters in children’s story books. Then the battle system is in front of a paper styled crowd. Battles are unique with all the choices you can do. The paper animation hides hidden items/enemies while also being used in part of the various puzzles in the gameplay. There is many enemies of various kinds in this game from all Mario video games.

Storyline of the video game:

  • Opening
  • Prologue: A Plea from the Stars
  • Chapter 1: Storming Koopa Bros. Fortress
  • Chapter 2: The Mystery of Dry, Dry Ruins
  • Chapter 3: The “Invincible” Tubba Blubba
  • Chapter 4: Trials in the Toy Box
  • Chapter 5: Hot, Hot Times on Lavalava Island
  • Chapter 6: Dark Days in Flower Fields
  • Chapter 7: A Star Spirit on Ice
  • Chapter 8: A Star-Powered Showdown!

Other then the official storyline, there is so much more to do. Plenty of side-missions to complete. Collectables to find. Items to unlock new areas. Easter eggs and hidden dialog. Shops to purchase and sell items. Hidden battle system upgrades/boosts. Much more to explore in the over world and more. You can also unlock partners in the game to use in the battle modes. Upgrading partners requires finding transparent blocks with glowing energy inside them.

One of my favorite/underrated Mario games that is out there. It is a long story with fun and interesting dialog. Brings out the nostalgia of old Mario in a total new way. You do not have to play this video game in a linear way. A worthy RPG video game that will take you some time to complete. The ending is difficult and has a fun final battle with Bowser. I recommend this Mario game to all fans of RPG video games. It is better than the modern Paper Mario video games in my opinion.
