Berserk, a tv show review

A tv show review by: Lee Sonogan

(1997-1998) Animated/Dark fantasy, action, tragedy

Griffith: It is my perception that a true friend never relies on anothers dream. A person with the potential to be my true friend must be able to find his own reason for life without my help. And he should put his heart and soul into protecting his dream. He would never hesitate to fight for his dream, even against me. For me, a true friend is one who stands equal to me in all respects.

This show is about Guts, a skilled swordsman who joins forces with a mercenary group named ‘The Band of the Hawk’, lead by the charismatic Griffith, and fights with them as they battle their way into the royal court. Originally a Manga in Japan, this tv show is only some of the complete story. Blood and brutality, this adult animated show is a very dark fantasy.

Guts’ sword weighs in at approximately 400lb and is 6’6 long- the longest sword to have ever been used in combat in the real world was 7′ long but weighed only 14lb. When Guts’ massive sword is unsheathed from his back the sheath often looks similar to a devil’s tail. This is most likely a reference to the numerous times Guts or those he encounters are said to have ‘The Devil’s own luck’.

The North America DVDs from Media Blasters come in red DVD cases to resemble blood. The series was going to air on the Sci-Fi Channel but Sci-Fi channel couldn’t get the rights to it. The series was going to be aired on Adult Swim but had too much graphic violence.

This show is very impressive. The closest thing I can think of close to it is game of thrones. But focused around three characters. The drama, dialog, speeches, action, style and much more sets it out to be one of the best anime television shows out there. Each episode is interesting and continues to develop interest. The ending is one of the most brutal and intense endings to a tv series i have seen. I recommend this anime to not kids, just adults who love anime and looking for something new and very impressive.

PS – There is a new adaptation of the show made in 2016 based off this adaptation after the shows final episode! I gonna watch that eventually!

Guts: Every sword belongs in its sheath. Go back to the sheath your master holds. Go back to Griffith.
