“On Venus you could cook a 16-inch pepperoni pizza in seven seconds, just by holding it out to the air. (Yes, I did the math.)”
― Neil deGrasse Tyson
Hawaiian pizza also known as Pizza Hawaii is a pizza topped with tomato sauce, cheese, pineapple, and Canadian bacon or ham. Some versions may include peppers, mushrooms, or bacon. A pineapple is neither a pine nor an apple, but a fruit consisting of many berries that have grown together. This also means that Pineapples are not a single fruit, but a group of berries that have fused together.
Pineapple as a pizza topping divides public opinion: Hawaiian was the most popular pizza in Australia in 1999, accounting for 15% of pizza sales, and a 2015 review of independent UK takeaways operating through Just Eat found the Hawaiian pizza to be the most commonly available. However, a 2016 survey of US adults had pineapple in the top three least favourite pizza toppings, behind anchovies and mushrooms.
The scientific name of a pineapple is Ananas comosus. This word comes from the Tupi words ‘nanas’ which means pine and ‘comosus’ which means tufted. Tupi is the language used by the Tupi people, who are indigenous people of Brazil. Pineapples were historically very useful on long boat trips. Eating pineapple prevented scurvy, and pineapple juice mixed with sand is a great cleaning agent for boats.

In February 2017, the president of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, reportedly told a group of high school students during a Q&A that he was fundamentally opposed to pineapple on pizza. He added that he would ban pineapple as a pizza topping if he could. This guy must have been a half glass empty type of guy to attempt such a thing on my favourite pizza. Must have had over a thousand of this type of pizza before in my life time. I recommend this food to everyone who is willing to give it a try.

“My love is pizza shaped. Won’t you have a slice? It’s circular, so there’s enough to go around.
