“There is no friend as loyal as a book.”
― Ernest Hemingway

Reading is a difficult task for some. Reading becomes easier if you research and make sure you get the right book for you. There are so many options to decide from. You just gotta know how to narrow it down and pick the correct one. It is much easier than staring at a shelf of books for twenty minutes and still not being sure what to get. Before we start, here are the genres of books you can buy to read below.

Genres of books: (Fiction and Non-fiction)

  • Adventure and action
  • Mystery
  • Fantasy
  • Drama
  • Science fiction (Futuristic)
  • Satire (Comedy, Humour)
  • Horror
  • Romance
  • Compilation of Short storys
  • Graphic novels/comics
  • Self help
  • Health
  • Travel
  • Religion, Spirituality and New age
  • Science
  • Poetry/art
  • Encyclopedias
  • Biographies
  • Autobiographies
  • Cookbooks
  • Educational/knowledge
  • And much more sub genres or combinations of genres!

You may want to start off with an easy book. My easy books were reading graphic novels. Always fiction before non-fiction. If you look hard enough, there might be an interesting book lying around your house to read. What do you watch that entertains you?  If you know genres then you can narrow down a search for it. Searching on the internet is the best way to find new books.

There are many websites that are useful for looking up new and interesting books. Some websites include goodreads.com, opening thebook.com, bookfinder.com and much more. Better yet, Youtube is full of reviews for books. While searching, filter in the searches for the Authors, subjects your interest in, recommendations and much more to find what you’re looking for easier.

Other ways not including using the internet are join a book club or go to a library and ask the librarian about what book you’re looking for. Recommendations from a friend that reads is a good option too. If your still desperate to find something to read, try reading a book that was turned into a movie. If you seen the movie, it helps to read the book of it.

Considering reading takes time and effort, you may want to read something that is shorter than a Novel. Usually Novellas and Non-fiction have fewer pages and are slightly less intimidating than books over 65,000 words. You need to read the book at the right times so do not read something out of your league. What everyone else is reading may be too hard for you if you are a beginner reader.

3 Point system for choosing books

  1. Book you want to read
  2. Books you feel you should read
  3. Books you need to read

There is nothing worse than buying a shit book. Maybe make a list like this? ungroovygords.com/2017/06/28/50-books-i-want-to-read/ . If you know of authors you might like, try looking at the books and recommendations they like. Do not try to find a random book, be a intentional reader of books. I recommend in-depth research before buying a book or even browsing at a book store. How do you know when you have the right book? You have read most of it and liked it very much.

PS – Head for the obvious classics for an interesting read. Better yet write your own book!
