A movie review: By Lee Sonogan
(2016) 2h3min/Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Bad guy characters of DC comics join forces against their will and become the anti-heroes of this movie. This film takes place after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This movie introduces many new characters into the live-action DC universe and a new version of the Joker. With a budget of 175$ million, this movie successfully made 739$ million at the box office. In an interview, director David Ayer said that in this film, a different side of Batman can be seen as he is shown from a villain’s perspective.
This is the second movie Will Smith and Margot Robbie starred in. They took the main roles in the film Focus. Other big stars in this movie include Viola Davis, Ben Affleck, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman and Jared Leto. To try to find the perfect Joker laugh, Jared Leto publicly tried different laughs in New York City and Toronto to see which ones made people the most uncomfortable. Jared Leto got so immersed in playing The Joker that he wouldn’t break out of character on set even when he wasn’t filming. He even sent his fellow cast members “Joker-like” presents: a live rat to Margot Robbie and bullets to Will Smith, a soiled Playboy magazine to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and a dead hog, anal beads and used condoms for the whole crew.
In May 2016, Warner Bros. announced that Margot Robbie would reprise her role as Harley Quinn in an upcoming Untitled Harley Quinn Project, which she would also produce. Not much has been revealed about the project, but it is rumoured to be focused on the female heroes and villains of the DC Universe.
Tom Hardy was originally cast as the character Rick Flag but dropped out due to The Revenant. Hardy had previously played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, who was a former member of the Suicide Squad in the comic books. Hardy later expressed his regret at leaving the role, given he did not want to lose the work. Ryan Gosling was sought out first for the role of The Joker. He reportedly turned down the role because he did not want to sign on for a multi-picture deal that the studio was requiring.
In conclusion, a group movie that’s not bad. There are many things in this movie I liked such as the choice of music, Will Smith’s Deadpool character, the jokes, action scenes, development of individual characters, and the ending. Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker is different, but nothing special. Even tho this movies Joker is about the relationship he has with Harley Quinn. Plus the overall acting of the Joker was good, adding that extra amount of emotion and intensity to his scenes and the overall story. I recommend this original DC movie to anyone who likes comics and superhero stories.
